Adjudicators’ Forum Seminar 2018

Adjudicators’ Forum Seminar 2018

Teaching and adjudication is two sides of the same coin. This is why the National Eisteddfod Academy (NEA),  invites all educators that are passionately involved in the teaching of music, dance, visual arts and drama to attend the annual one day Adjudicators’ Seminar on 4 August 2018 at Reddam House School Helderfontein.

In its quest for excellence in adjudication the NEA has established clear guidelines regarding the expected levels of performance and has defined a style of adjudication that acknowledges individual achievement and emphasises the joy of participation in the arts.

Adjudication in the arts is not only an evaluation of a performance, but also the art of sensing possibility”, says Dr Francois van den Berg CEO of the National Eisteddfod Academy. “Adjudication deals with human beings and their feelings. An insensitive adjudicator can kill underlying potential and future interest in the arts”.

Being the biggest organisation of this nature in the country, the National Eisteddfod Academy is acutely aware of the enormous responsibility of adjudicating performances that involve 30 000 – 40 000 participants (and their supporters!) in the National Eisteddfod of South Africa® annually.

For this reason, the NEA annually presents an intensive, one-day training seminar. The purpose of this seminar is not to provide in-depth training in any of the art disciplines. The art of adjudication is not something that one can “teach” in one day. The theme of the 2018 seminar will be Brand Alignment and the Pursuit of Awesome. These concepts will be further introduced and unpacked at the coming seminar to be presented as follows:

Date:              4 August 2018

Time:              09:00 – 16:00

Established adjudicators are also reminded that they should attend this Seminar at least once every second year in order to maintain their current rating. (This rating determines the hourly rate for adjudication).
