NATIONAL EISTEDFOD YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS COMPETITION

 

RULES AND REGULATIONS

 

  • By entering this competition, the participant accepts the rules of the competition as provided below and in supplementary documents on the website.
  • Only diploma-level candidates in the National Eisteddfod of South Africa in the preceding year (or similar achievements in other festivals and competitions in the preceding year) may enter (excluding all categories as listed on the website).
  • Participants are allowed to enter multiple entries in the genre and category for which they have qualified. E.g. a participant who received a diploma for a Narrative poem in the Poetry category may also enter one or more of the other poetry categories. These options will only appear when submitting an entry online.
  • Grades refer to the school grade of the participant in the current
  • Entry fees will be determined by the date of submission of entries.
  • Entry fees/proof of payment should accompany all entries and are due with the submission of entries (online and hard copy entries).
  • Entry fees are NOT refundable.
  • The decision of the adjudicators is final, and NO correspondence in this regard can be allowed.
  • All entries will be grouped and scheduled according to the various categories and grade codes. The recordings of all video entries will be adjudicated in the same session as the live performances of the corresponding categories and grades.
  • Two options are available for adjudication in the FIRST & QUARTER FINALS ROUNDS and are determined by the participant’s province of residence:
    • LIVE PERFORMANCE– Participants have the option to perform live at a given venue. Details on the date, time and venue will be published on the online entry platform.
    • LIVE PERFORMANCE: A participant will be required to perform live according to the schedule of events that will be provided.
    • VIDEO RECORDED PERFORMANCE– Only participants resident outside the Gauteng Province have the option to submit video-recorded entries for this competition, but only for the first and second rounds. These video recordings of performances should be submitted before the deadline for video entries as published on the website.
  • Requirements for video entries:
    • A professional recording is not required.
    • NO editing of a recording is allowed, e.g. “tweaking” of intonation errors, etc.
    •  All video submissions should be recorded in the format as outlined in the Guidelines and requirements for Video Recorded Entries as published on the official website.
  • For practical and other reasons, some items and categories are excluded from the list of approved categories for this competition. These items include the following:
    • All prepared and unprepared reading items.
    • All unprepared and improvised acting categories, e.g. unprepared storytelling, theatre sports, creative advert, improvisation and unprepared mime.
    • One-act plays and workshop productions
    • Unprepared public speaking
    • Debating and group public speaking.
    • All Novice music items
    • Elementary music items (Gr. R – 6)
  • For aspiring participants who have not participated in any eisteddfod event in the past year, or participants who have participated but didn’t obtain the required diploma award, the NEA has created a Preliminary Qualifying Roundas an alternative opportunity, subject to the following conditions:
    • The aspiring participant must submit an ONLINE VIDEO entry as if it were submitted for the annual Eisteddfod in the previous year
    • The required entry form, as published on the website, must be submitted before the closing date for these entries as published on the website.
    • The proof of payment of the required non-refundable special entry fee must be submitted with this entry.
    • All Preliminary Qualifying Round videos will be submitted to members of the NEA Adjudicators’ Forum for adjudication, and the outcome of this adjudication will be communicated by e-mail to these participants in time to allow successful participants to enter the Young Performer Awards Competition before the closing dates for live and video entries.

 

ADJUDICATION PROCESS:

  • First Round:

A panel of adjudicators will adjudicate all entries.

Quarter Final Round:

A limited number of participants will be selected during the First Round for the Quarter Final Round.

  • Semi-Final Round:
    The Semi-Final Round will be presented in concert format in 4 sessions: Speech and Drama, Dance, Contemporary & Classical Music. The overall junior and senior winners of all sections will be announced at each of these semi-final rounds.
  • Final Event:
    The overall junior and senior winners of all sections will compete in the Final Round
